What is an IT disaster recovery plan?
The purpose of an IT disaster recovery plan is to prepare your business in the event of service outages caused by factors beyond your control. This could be anything from a serious, local problem with your IT to a natural disaster or a man-made event like a terrorist attack. A disaster recovery plan provides the steps to take to restore services to the widest extent possible in a minimum time frame.
We are all increasingly dependent on technology, so the first step is to identify which areas are priorities. We use technology for everything these days from email, VoIP telephone systems, databases and websites. Servers process information and large amounts of data and we all know how frustrating it is when things don’t work even for just a short period of time.
Every business is different but there will be key technologies that each business needs to function. Recovery strategies should be developed which can be used to recover or restore key data or technologies to enable the business to function again as quickly as possible.
Customer data may be vitally important for the long-term growth of the business but may not be the first thing that is required to begin operating. A disaster recovery plan will outline priorities, the recovery process and the timeline for each element.
